ABOUT THIS ROLE
RootsTable is a new fine dining restaurant rooted in the traditions of Appalachia, located inside Ferleman Gallery. We are building something with intention — a place where seasonal cooking, thoughtful sourcing, and genuine hospitality come together to create an experience guests will remember.
The Host is the first voice guests hear and the first face they see. This role is for someone who understands that exceptional hospitality begins before anyone is seated — in the warmth of a greeting, the calm of a well-managed room, and the confidence that comes from caring about the details. We're looking for someone who takes pride in setting the tone, not just opening the door.
This is a role for someone who is genuinely energized by people — outgoing, warm, and quick to read a room. You don't need a background in fine dining, but you do need to be sharp: able to think on your feet, hold a lot of details at once, and make every guest feel like the only person in the room. If you thrive in moments of connection and can find satisfaction in the steady rhythm of a well-run service — not just the rush — this is a role worth your time.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Be the First and Last Impression
- Welcome every guest with warmth and genuine attentiveness — making each person feel expected, valued, and cared for from the moment they arrive.
- Manage departures with the same intention as arrivals, ensuring guests leave with a lasting positive impression of RootsTable.
- Answer phones and respond to inquiries with professionalism, patience, and accurate information.
Own the Flow of the Dining Room
- Manage reservations, waitlists, and seating with accuracy and foresight — anticipating needs before they become problems.
- Coordinate with servers and kitchen to ensure pacing, table turns, and guest flow support a smooth, unhurried dining experience.
- Maintain awareness of the full room — tracking table status, guest needs, and service timing simultaneously.
Set the Tone
- Communicate clearly and calmly with front-of-house and back-of-house teams to keep service running seamlessly.
- Handle unexpected situations — delays, special requests, guest concerns — with composure and quiet problem-solving.
- Create a sense of arrival: the physical space, the energy, and the greeting should all signal that guests are somewhere special.
Uphold the Standard
- Keep the host stand, entryway, and dining room entrance clean, organized, and guest-ready at all times.
- Contribute to a team culture defined by professionalism, accountability, and mutual respect.
- Uphold all applicable health, safety, and service standards without exception.
Support Events and Programming
- Manage guest flow and arrivals during gallery openings, concerts, and special events at Ferleman Gallery.
- Approach dynamic, high-energy environments with the same poise and hospitality as a standard dinner service.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Genuinely gregarious and people-driven — someone who gets energy from guests, not drained by them, and whose warmth comes naturally rather than from a script.
- Socially intelligent — able to read guests quickly, adapt your approach, and navigate the full range of people who walk through our door.
- Organized and composed — someone who can manage multiple moving pieces without losing warmth or focus.
- Calm under pressure — someone who handles the unexpected with grace and keeps the energy steady for both guests and teammates.
- A reliable team player who shows up ready, communicates well, and contributes to a focused, intentional service.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior hosting, front desk, or customer-facing hospitality experience is preferred; genuine warmth and strong interpersonal instincts are essential.
- Comfort with reservation systems and the ability to learn new tools quickly.
- Flexible availability across dinner and Sunday brunch shifts, Tuesday through Sunday.
- Consistent, dependable attendance — our guests and teammates count on it.
