Ferleman Gallery is dedicated to connecting visitors with contemporary art through meaningful, engaging experiences. Gallery Docents are volunteers—guiding guests through exhibitions, sharing insights about the artwork, and helping create an atmosphere of curiosity and connection.
Key Responsibilities:
Gallery Engagement
- Lead Informal Tours: Offer approachable, conversational insights into current exhibitions, artists, themes, and techniques—no lecturing required.
- Engage Visitors in Dialogue: Encourage questions, spark conversations, and help visitors form their own meaningful interpretations.
- Serve as a Floor Presence: Circulate through the gallery to answer questions, help guests navigate the space, and foster a welcoming environment.
Front Desk & Visitor Support
- Greet Visitors: Offer a warm welcome and orient guests to exhibitions, events, and gallery amenities.
- Provide General Information: Share details about hours, programming, Gallery Stage performances, and the broader mission of Ferleman Gallery.
- Phone Reception: Answer basic inquiries and direct calls as needed.
- Event Check-In: Assist with greeting and checking in attendees during programs and concerts.
- Front Desk Maintenance: Keep the reception area tidy, organized, and visitor-ready.
Qualifications
- Comfortable speaking with individuals and small groups
- Friendly, welcoming, and eager to help visitors feel at ease
- Interest in contemporary art (no formal background required—training is provided)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliable, punctual, and attentive to detail
- Ability to learn key information about exhibitions, artists, and gallery programming
- Professional demeanor at both the desk and on the gallery floor
Training Provided
Docents receive guidance on:
- How to talk about art without jargon
- Key themes and artists in current exhibitions
- Visitor engagement techniques
- Basic front desk procedures and phone etiquette
Time Commitment
Shifts usually run 3–4 hours, with flexible scheduling on weekdays and weekends.
